Of all the events that require photographers to be both talented, and well equipped, weddings are the most difficult. This is particularly the case when it comes to taking photos in extremely low light.
However, whether you’re just getting into Houston Wedding Photography, or just a student looking to earn some extra cash, you will face this problem. There are a few ways to take capture great low-light scenes, but you will need a bit of equipment:
1. Buy a great, high power flash. Essential to all photographers, regardless of style:The most obvious solution is to use a powerful flash in order to compensate for the lack of light. It is usually a good idea to only raise the ISO to about 1600 and if you need more light, to consider using a flash.
Keep in mind that if you have a pop-up flash, you won’t have a lot of flexibility, but if you use an external one, it’s better to bounce the light off a wall. This will make the light seem less harsh.
Also, keep in mind that using a flash doesn’t mean that you can turn your ISO back to 100, it simply means that you will have a little help. Try to keep it at 400-500 for the best results.
2. Choose your lenses carefully, especially if you’re into Houston Wedding Photography:Try using 50mm lenses, 35mm, or even 17.5mm. This will not only help you but also give you the ability to capture scenes in a much more natural way that by using a flash or editing techniques. However, keep in mind that each lens is perfect for a particular situation, and you should never take a 50mm lens with you, hoping that it’s the only thing that you will use.
3. Get your game on with some editing techniquesPost-processing can do wonders when it comes to saving photos that are either too dark or contain areas that are too dark. Give Lightroom a try, as it is currently one of the most popular editing apps for these cases.
However, keep in mind that you’re looking at quite a bit of work. It may be a lot easier, and time efficient to simply buy an appropriate lens in order to cut your editing time in half. Also, the photographs will seem much more natural, as they won’t be tampered with.
